Brother Kirkpatrick received the degrees in Freemasonry from Jacques DeMolay Lodge No. 1390, Houston, Texas. He was initiated as an Entered Apprentice Mason on July 28, 1967; passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on June 5, 1968; and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on April 16, 1969. He presided as Worshipful Master during the 1979-1980 term.

Brother Kirkpatrick is a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, having received the degrees from the Houston bodies in May 1970.
