Joe Calvin Sullivan was born on December 6, 1990 in Lovelady, Texas. He graduated from Baylor University in 1932, afterwards attending the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he was ordained a minister of the gospel. Beginning in 1944, and up until the time of his death, he served as the pastor of Larkin Street Baptist Church, and was a primary force in the establishment of Houston Baptist University.
He was married, and had four children.
Reverend Brother Sullivan received the degrees of Freemasonry from Garrison Lodge No. 670 in Garrison, Texas. He was initiated as an Entered Apprentice Mason on June 6, 1927; passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on February 26, 1929; and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on May 27, 1929. He affiliated with Jacques DeMolay Lodge in June 1961, and presided over the Lodge as Worshipful Master from 1972 to 1973.
Reverend Brother Sullivan was a member of the Chapter, Council and Commandery of the York Rite, and served as the Grand Chaplain of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masons of Texas.
He was a member of the Eastern Star, and had served as Worthy Patron of Okmulgee Chapter in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
He was also a member of the Shrine and the Grotto.
Reverend Brother Sullivan was a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, having received the degrees from the Houston bodies in April and May 1962. For his service and devotion to the Rite, he was invested with the rank and decoration of a Knight Commander of the Court of Honour in 1973.
Reverend Brother Sullivan passed away May 13, 1981 at the age of 80 years. He was laid to rest at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston.
